Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup brown sugar, packed

4 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup buttermilk

2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced

1 teaspoon cinnamon

½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugars: In another bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

Incorporate Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time to the butter mixture, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract until fully combined.

Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.

Add Apples and Nuts: Gently fold in the diced apples, cinnamon, and chopped nuts (if using). Ensure the apples are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Pour and Spread: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly with a spatula.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool the Cake: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Serve: Once cooled, dust the top with powdered sugar if desired. Slice and serve your Cocoa Apple Delight Cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra treat!
