Sausage and Pepper Hoagie Bake

Ingredients
  

1 lb Italian sausage (sweet or spicy, your choice)

1 large red bell pepper, sliced

1 large green bell pepper, sliced

1 large onion, sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for extra heat)

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 tbsp olive oil

4 hoagie rolls

1 1/2 cups marinara sauce

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions
 

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

    Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the Italian sausage. Cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon (about 8-10 minutes). Remove from the skillet and set aside.

      Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the sliced onions and bell peppers. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until they are tender. Stir in the minced garlic, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

        Combine Ingredients: Add the cooked sausage back into the skillet with the sautéed vegetables. Pour in the marinara sauce and mix everything until well combined. Let the mixture simmer for 3-4 minutes to meld the flavors together.

          Prepare Hoagie Rolls: Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise without cutting all the way through, creating a pocket.

            Assemble the Hoagies: Place the hoagie rolls on a baking dish. Fill each roll generously with the sausage and pepper mixture. Top evenly with shredded mozzarella cheese.

              Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the rolls are slightly toasted.

                Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a couple of minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired before serving.
