Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

4 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

For the Crust and Crumble Topping:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Caramel Swirl:

1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

Prepare the Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Make the Apple Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the diced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, lemon juice, and flour. Toss until the apples are well coated. Set aside to let the flavors meld.

Prepare the Crust and Topping: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, cream the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until crumbly.

Assemble the Bars: Take about two-thirds of the crumble mixture and press it into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to form an even layer. Pour the apple mixture evenly over the crust.

Add the Caramel: Drizzle the caramel sauce over the apple filling. You can use a knife or the back of a spoon to swirl the caramel slightly into the apples if desired.

Top with Remaining Crumble: Sprinkle the remaining crumble mixture evenly over the top of the apples and caramel.

Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.

Cool and Serve: Allow the crumble bars to cool in the pan for about 20-30 minutes. Cut into squares and serve warm or at room temperature. You can dust with powdered sugar for an extra touch if desired!
